With winter fast approaching we will soon arrive at the time when poverty cuts deepest and food banks become most stretched. Frequently hidden from sight, real hardship touches an increasing number of working families facing a monthly choice between food banks and loan sharks.
This year it is very much the case of Belper's 'We Shall overcome' weekend with a Friday night's entertainment at the Unitarian Chapel preceding our night at The Queens Head where for your delectation we bring you Chesterfield's finest in the form of The Silk Road, local novelist, poet and performer Sophie Sparham + one Carol Hodges who incidentally also forms part of Steve Ignorant's Slice of Life and , yes, they return on November 12th.
It's a big ask to turn out on two consecutive nights but your donations of food and money will make a big difference. Plus, you will be entertained !

When Bob Dylan strapped on his first electric guitar, the purists cried 'Judas'. Now with their own brand of electro-folk, the ground shakes once again with a trio described as the most vital and charismatic thing in English folk.
With a range of material ranging from medieval pilgrims to the Gallipoli campaign and care in the community, the trio's instrumentation is no less eclectic. Supported by electro programming, they feature guitar, banjo, viola, accordion and harp with lead glockenspiel lending an ethereal and sometimes menacing edge to their music. No wonder that their 2014 album was titled 'All Life is Here' and was described as 'bold and original' by The Observer.
Now,with their latest album 'War Stories' given a four star review by The Guardian, they return to Belper. Definitely cutting edge music which continues to transform the folk world.

The first of what I hope will be a regular series of events to promote and celebrate local artists comes alive on Friday September 16th.
Itty Bitty Committee's fusion of folk/hip hop and beyond is already firmly established on the local scene as are the songs of Nick and Joel so this evening will give them a chance to stretch out and play a range of material. If for any reason you are unfamiliar with their work, this will be your chance to discover what the local scene has to offer.
Giving an interview to a Manchester radio station, Chris Butler was amused to hear Belper described as the Nashville of England. Maybe they had a point !
