Though largely appreciated as a consummate songwriter, Steve is also a virtuoso guitarist and interpreter of traditional material who has recently completed his first novel 'All for Poor Jack'. The critical acclaim for the novel included a nod of approval from one of his US counterparts. One B.Dylan to be precise. Now ,with a new album 'Happenstance' under his belt we can expect an evening of new material and old favourites.

Sadly, Steve didn't get to play The Assembly Rooms in Derby on one singularly ill-fated evening in March. However, for those who missed him, here is a chance to see one of the true greats of the English folk scene. Widely covered and respected by other musicians, many of his songs have become standards with classics like 'Slip Jigs and Reels' becoming a regular in any Fairport set. It is even rumoured that one Bruce Springsteen features 'Here's to Tom Paine' in performance.

Very few artists can have claimed to have shared a stage with artists as diverse as Rambling Jack Elliot, Dick Gaughan and Kinky Friedman but Nels Andrews is that artist. Recognised as a consummate songwriter within the Americana circle, his breakthrough came in 2012 with the release of the album 'Scrimshaw'. As the name suggests, it is a perfectly crafted and carved piece of work which was instantly acclaimed by Bob Harris as one of his albums of the year. Drawing comparisons with Tom Waits and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks' period, Nels is currently the focus of critical acclaim. 'Like finding a seashell in a dusty cupboard and suddenly discovering the sound of the ocean'. Nels is currently touring with Banjo player, Brandon Seabrook and makes his Belper debut next Friday. Tickets available from The Cherry Orchard in Market Square,Belper. Now formally installed as Folk on 2 Best Duo, Phillip and Hannah make a welcome return to Belper.Their eclectic mix delighted the audience last September and ,with their 'bravely original' album 'Mynd' winning them a wider audience , this gig is clearly unmissable. Drawing on roots as diverse as Appalaichan, traditional folk music and an injection of ska, it is hardly surprising that they have taken the folk scene by storm joining fellow Devonian Seth Lakeman at the forefront of contemporary folk. A classic model of folk roots - new routes. Tickets available at the venue or contact [email protected]. |
