From Kilburn London to Austin Texas is just part of Sean Taylor's extraordinary musical pilgrimage. Barely into his thirties, Sean has already released eight albums and the latest 'Flood and Burn' has attracted more than usual attention. Featured on Radio Two by Huey Morgan, the album was awarded four stars by Mojo Magazine only for R2 to go one better and give it five. Recorded with such luminaries as Danny Thompson and Roscoe Beck ( musical director for the late Leonard Cohen) and produced by Mark Hellman feted for his work with Carole King among others, the album has been widely praised for its seamless fusion of folk, blues and jazz. 'A record that shows maturity, confidence, growth and an artist having the total freedom to be himself.'

'On Earth as it is in Austin' is not only the title of Bob Cheevers' tenth studio album but more of a statement of intent. Surprisingly for an artist so closely associated with the Texan school of songwriting, Bob only relocated from Nashville to Austin in 2008. Disillusioned by the chart oriented treadmill of the Nashville scene, he was clearly in search of a different world populated by rebels, outlaws, dreamers and lovers. He obviously found it because in 2011 the Texas Music Academy voted him singer-songwriter of the year. Bob still tours extensively both in America and Europe and the trail once again leads to Belper. A songwriter of real distinction he reflects 'I don't know if these stories are true but they happened to me'. Accompaniment comes from London's Geoff Haves. Tickets for this gig and Sean Taylor ( February 17th) are available at the venue or contact mjones [email protected]. Headsticks return to The Queens Head to headline an evening of midwinter music guaranteed to dispel most seasonal disorders. The Cold Grey English Skies Tour seems like an apt title for this time of the year and taken from their recent album 'Feather and Flame' the song is rapidly becoming one of the anthems of austerity UK. However in typical Headsticks fashion it also suggests that it really doesn't have to be this way. Where Headsticks stand head and shoulders above similar bands is their ability to weld folk melodies and punk energy which combined with top drawer songwriting makes a Headsticks gig a genuinely uplifting experience. Support on this occasion comes from Chris Butler and Jack's Got a Plan making their Queens Head debut. If the name sounds unfamiliar, some of the faces aren't so a bit of a treat there. Please do turn up early for this one as it promises to be a bit of a mini-festival to chase away the grey skies and perhaps even usher in a breath of Spring. |
