ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER. DECEMBER 12th. Support from Chris Butler. Admission £7. Doors at 8.00pm.

29/11/2015

It seems like a long time since Attila was first broken on the airwaves by John Peel. I believe it was 1982. Of course, long before then Attila was an established member of the Brighton punk scene as the bass player of Brighton Riot and those of us who crowded into the Resource Centre and neighbouring taverns will remember this as a time of unprecedented creativity. Bands came and bands went but Attila's career as poet, ranter and  activist has never stood still. Artists such as Billy Bragg and New Model Army regularly opened for him whilst he broke down barriers with regular tours of East Germany as was and would have toured North Korea if prior Canadian engagements hadn't got in the way.
His long overdue autobiography is now here and I for one look forward to reading his viewpoint of those heady days and perhaps filling in gaps in my own memories. Attila's gig at The Queens Head will of course coincide with the visit of his beloved Brighton and Hove Albion to a nearby stadium. Win ,lose or draw this one is pretty unmissable.
In support, our very own Chris Butler will continue to unveil new material so an early arrival is advised.
Tickets available at the venue or contact mjones572@hotmail.co.uk.

KENT DUCHAINE at THE QUEENS HEAD. NOVEMBER 28th. Support from Chris and Dave. £8. Doors at 8.00pm.

22/11/2015

'Steeped in the blues' is surely one of the oldest musical cliches around but in the case of Kent Duchaine it is more of an understatement. As a young musician venturing into the clubs of Chicago, he was spotted and handed his first recording deal by no less than the great Willie Dixon and since then has gone on to tour with what reads like a who's who of the blues. Not least among these legends was one Johnny Shines with whom Kent toured and recorded in the late eighties almost precisely fifty years after Shines had travelled with Robert Johnson.
All of these contacts and influences have distilled into what makes Kent Duchaine such a major and distinctive player with his sound perfectly conveyed through his beloved Leadbessie, a 1934 National Steel which Kent fondly believes may have been touched if not played by one of the great Delta bluesmen. At least he earned the privilege of touring and recording with some of them thus creating a living bridge in blues history.
Support on this night comes from our very own blues duo, Chris and Dave.

Captain Chaos. November 21st. Admission £8. Doors at 8.00pm.

14/11/2015

Picture
Best described as a loose musical collective, Captain Chaos are no strangers to local audiences and connoisseurs of the festival scene. The line up of Andy Martin, Eliza P and Jolly Jock are actually all accomplished and versatile musicians but are justly renowned for their good time feel and love of music hall humour. Andy Martin humbly describes himself as a squeezer of inflatable boxes but plays a range of instruments and has featured in more serious projects such as Loscoe State Opera. Eliza P's take on modern life has been compared with that of Victoria Wood while Jock remains uniquely...Jock. Expect to hear the iceberg's side of a certain nautical disaster and remain concerned by Uncle Walter's hazardous nocturnal adventures.
Collectively they summon up a world where all cars were painted black and boy scouts still wore shorts.
Admission is £8 and doors at 8.00pm.

Steve Ignorant's Slice of Life, Andy T and Chris Butler. Friday November 13th. £10. 8.00pm.

1/11/2015

Just over two years ago, Steve Ignorant premiered his Slice of Life line-up at this very venue. The former Crass front man has not stood still since Crass dismantled in 1985 and this line up sees Steve exploring his own musical history with a group of talented new musicians. Touching on his career with a legendary punk band, Slice of Life also opens a window on the context of the music and the people who made it.
Andy T on the other hand will delight any one who ever thrilled to the words and music of The Fall. Passionate and committed, his words are complimented by a band steeped in early Joy Division grooves and his gigs are simply unmissable. The final component of a great package is our very own Chris Butler now testing out some powerful new material.
Tickets are available at the venue or contact mjones572@hotmail.co.uk. Advance booking is recommended for this one and please turn up early to avoid missing any of the fun.
