From Belper to Brazil, Dave Sturt has long been one of music's great collaborators. Middlesbrough born, Dave relocated to London in the early eighties where he was soon playing music with the likes of Dave Gilmour and Bill Nelson. Further recognition came as a member of Jade Warrior and Cipher and Belper audiences will of course be aware of his work on the Past Lives Project and as a member of local heroes, Moon Bullet.
Since 2009, Dave has been a member of Gong where touring has taken him from Europe to Sao Paolo and even with the sad demise of Daevid Allen a version of Gong will continue with Dave Sturt as an integral part.

Fitting now perhaps that one of the great collaborators has embarked on his own project and this gig will offer a tantalising glimpse of Dave's forthcoming solo album.
Turn up early for this one.

From Brazil to Belper, Dave Sturt has led an extraordinary musical career.
Middlesborough born, it was not long before Dave relocated to London and at an early age began the long series of collaborations that have marked his musical journey. A member of Jade Warrior, Cipher and latterly Gong, Dave is also known for his work with the likes of Bill Nelson and is widely respected as one of the UK's finest and most versatile bass guitarists.
However, in recent years it is his recording and touring with Gong that has taken him from Europe to Brazil while still finding time to gig with local heroes, Moon Bullet and collaborate with Theo Travis on the Past Lives Project, writing and performing the perfect soundtracks for found footage of everyday lives.
Not surprising then that Dave has found little time for solo projects which is why this gig is a bit special being a curtain raiser for his soon to be released solo album.

One to turn up early for !

HARP AND A MONKEY. MAY 23rd. Admission £7. Doors at 8.15pm.

When Harp and a Monkey made their Belper debut last year, they were something of an unknown quantity. However, only a few weeks later they were playing The Royal Exchange, Manchester to a capacity audience as part of a WW1 cycle and are now widely tipped for that quantum leap to 'something big'. With instrumentation and electronic embellishments breaking the boundaries of conventional folk, the trio's songwriting is also defiantly different mixing their own themes with re-writes of traditional songs. Sometimes trance-like and sometimes gritty their words and music are deeply rooted in their native Lancashire. Add to this strong vocals and arrangements with miniature harp and glockenspiel to the fore and you begin to understand why they have been described as an 'Incredible String Band for the 21st Century'.
